He’s tall with blue eyes and has one big unfavorable trait: he’s not interested in his wife.
Cory Logan is another character we meet early in the pages of PLEBEIAN REVEALED. He’s the husband of Lauren and father to their two teenagers, Lee and Aiden. And while I was writing this story, there were several times where I wanted to slug him.
In the beginning of PLEBEIAN REVEALED, Lauren is coming off of an emotional high, finishing a televised concert to debut Plebeian’s inaugural album. Of course Cory isn’t even looking up to congratulate her. His seventeen-year marriage is on the rocks and he doesn’t even seem to know. His wife desperately clings to the obligations of their marriage while he can't be bothered to let her know when he’s coming home.
With Cory’s character I wanted conflict with a capital C. He doesn’t return her texts or remember where she is, but he sure seems threatened when her ex-boyfriend Johnny is around. So maybe deep inside, he really does love her? Or is work his true love? Or something else…
Davis Perkins has the lucky honor of being the first character who speaks in Plebeian Revealed. He’s the band manager, a skinny, married man who has no experience in rock-in-roll (other than his father once being in the business.) He, along with two other characters in the book, worked at the fictitious Riverside Resort in Tampa. That is, until his friend Lauren Logan became famous.
Lauren trusts him with more than the secrets of her life, she trusts him with her life. He’s reliable and logical, but perhaps not very fashionable, choosing to wear his blue plaid shirt and blue pair of boat shoes wherever he goes. We’ll learn a little more in Plebeian in Danger (book two) about why those shoes are so special.
With Davis, I wanted a fun but loyal presence in Lauren’s life. Imagine a band manager that the lead singer actually trusts! But with Lauren and Davis, their trust has history.
Here’s my spoiler-free favorite quote from Davis Perkins: “I’m hungry too!”
Lauren and Andy; Johnny and Amie; Oliver and his cigar; Davis and his blue boat shoes.
Oh, those characters in the Plebeian series! It's been a blast for me to develop them and their relationships. If you've read the book, then you already know them. If you haven't read the book, this will be a great time to meet them.
Each week I will be posting a "Backstage Pass" story about one character. These are spoiler-free summaries of who they are and what role they play in the books. I'll also include my favorite spoiler-free quote from each.
First up for your Backstage Pass story: that blue boat shoe-wearing band manager, Davis Perkins.
Check back later this week for his story.
While writing these books I had a thought. What if I could get one person who doesn’t read books (like me!) to sit down and read? What if one person had PLEBEIAN REVEALED in their hands, began reading, and then couldn’t put it down? I thought if someone did that, honestly, that would be my biggest accomplishment.
And it has happened.
My friend Lori has known about my writing project for three years. She doesn’t read books either. She always joked that the only way she’ll know what happens in these books is if a movie is made about them. Then 2016 rolled around and Lori’s resolution was to read more. I gave her one of the proof books. She sat down on a Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. and finished PLEBEIAN REVEALED by 10 a.m. the next day! I should add: she’s a busy, married mother of three children (all under the age of nine) and she runs her own business.
Now she wants me to release PLEBEIAN IN DANGER sooner than March.
So, if anyone out there is like Lori…if any non-readers pick up this book and read it all the way through...please let me know. I’d love to hear your story.
